Youth-run community organization outside Mombasa, Kenya!
Short description
Hatua Likoni is a coalition of community organizations in Likoni, Kenya helping vulnerable children and families in poverty become self-sustaining.
Our coalition, comprised of Total War Against AIDS Youth Foundation (TWAAYF), the Likoni Scholarship Fund (LSF), and Madaraka Community School, target the needs of vulnerable children by providing nursery education, scholarships for primary and secondary school students, a home for orphans and abandoned children, after school tutoring, peer mentoring, football tournaments, youth talent shows, and community service events, all to help young people achieve their goals and become self-sustaining adults.
To assist families in poverty, we aim to help parents increase their income. Since most working Likoni residents operate small businesses, we are implementing small business education classes that teach effective business practices and help entrepreneurs access microfinance loans. As our programs grow, our coalition will also become a source of employment, paying living wages that enable Hatua Likoni's employees to be self-sufficient while serving the needs of children, youth, and families in our community.
